Aquariums

Our special solutions made of PLEXIGLAS® show what is possible in the field of sophisticated aquarium constructions. Whether impressive tunnel aquariums, flexible half-tunnel solutions or precisely manufactured spherical aquariums and portholes – swissplast realizes special projects with the highest demands on statics, clarity and design. These examples exemplify our technical expertise and experience in the field of individual large and special aquariums.

Art in public space

The ability to produce monolithic, highly transparent, crystal-clear blocks of virtually unlimited size opens up completely new possibilities, especially for artists, architects and designers. In addition, these monoliths are absolutely resistant to ageing and UV radiation and can be produced in all geometries and surfaces. It is only up to you and your creativity to challenge us in the processing of PLEXIGLAS®.

Stage components

Our customized solutions made of PLEXIGLAS® and acrylic glass are also used in professional stage construction. For productions such as PARSIFAL at the Salzburg Easter Festival, we created illuminated, highly load-bearing stage floors and large-format, seamless acrylic cylinders as props. These projects demonstrate the versatility of our materials and our expertise in the implementation of sophisticated special components for stages and events.

Facades

Our façade solutions made of high-quality acrylic glass impressively demonstrate how technical innovation and modern design can work together. From seamless high-gloss façades such as the Vitra VSL Factory to individually shaped elements with integrated portholes and transparent walkways in the Kaindl project: swissplast realizes sophisticated architectural components in unusual dimensions and geometries. Outstanding material properties, precise production and strong partners enable façades that set new standards both aesthetically and functionally.

Glazing for botanical gardens

Our large-format acrylic glass solutions enable transparent climate envelopes that create optimum conditions for plants and visitors. The project in the Zurich Botanical Garden is an example of how energy-efficient, internally ventilated double envelopes, high light transmission and absolute UV stability can be combined. The screwless direct glazing installation and the durable PERSPEX® CC material make this type of special glazing the ideal solution for demanding greenhouses and botanical facilities.

Kunsthaus Graz

With 1,242 individually shaped acrylic components, the Kunsthaus Graz impressively demonstrates how freely and organically architecture can be designed with technical thermoplastics. The transparent and semi-transparent building envelope made of PLEXIGLAS® GS combines maximum UV stability, a durable appearance and economical production thanks to low weights and efficient processing. The iconic “Friendly Alien” thus became the architectural highlight of the Cultural Capital Graz 2003 – a prime example of the variety of shapes that can be realized with modern plastics.

Viaduc de Millau

Special, stress-free molded parts made of PLEXIGLAS® were used for the world’s highest freeway bridge, contributing to wind stabilization and the filigree overall architecture. A total of 7,315 components, each 3.7 meters long, were developed on the basis of wind tunnel tests in order to meet the aerodynamic requirements of the approximately 60,000 m² roadway surface. The combination of low weight, high freedom of form and exceptional transparency was decisive for the realization of the elegant, light-looking bridge construction based on the designs by Lord Norman Foster.

Swimming pool covers

Swimming pool covers made of transparent plastics offer a durable and functional solution for private and commercial pool facilities. Thanks to their high weather and UV resistance, the materials retain their visual clarity and stability over the long term. At the same time, they improve energy efficiency, reduce heat loss and protect the water from contamination. Individually moldable plastic elements allow for flexible shapes and dimensions – from flat covers to curved roofs – so that every construction can be harmoniously integrated into its surroundings.

In the field of architecture & design, individual plastic parts offer enormous creative freedom and open up possibilities that are often impossible to realize with glass, metal or classic materials. Large-scale façade cladding, transparent aquarium constructions, free-form objects or illuminated structural elements can be produced precisely, easily and with a high-quality appearance thanks to modern thermoforming technology.

Swissplast relies on technical thermoplastics in a wide range of materials and thicknesses. Projects such as transparent furniture, structured wall and ceiling elements or light-guiding design components benefit from the materials’ high dimensional stability, outstanding optical quality and diverse surface options.

Factors such as low weight, easy processing, weather resistance and high impact and UV resistance play a decisive role, particularly in the architectural environment. Plastic components for architecture, exhibitions, art installations and special constructions

Swissplast manufactures plastic components for a wide range of architectural and design applications. These include transparent components for large aquariums, show tanks and botanical installations as well as high-performance covers and panes for swimming pools. Lightweight, large-area and dimensionally stable thermoformed components that can be installed quickly and also meet high visual standards are also in demand for trade fair and stage construction.

For projects in public spaces – such as art objects, design installations, illuminated façade elements or free-form sculptures – thermoplastics offer almost unlimited design possibilities. The materials can be clear, translucent, colored or textured and are available with special functional surfaces such as anti-scratch, UV protection or mirror coatings on request.

Even technically demanding special solutions, such as those required for major architectural projects (e.g. Viaduc de Millau), can be implemented precisely and economically with our production technology. Our components are durable, lightweight, low-maintenance and meet the high requirements for stability, weather resistance and visual quality – ideal for long-term indoor and outdoor use.
